Details

Just round the corner from Port Talbot and the busy M4, lie the hidden valleys of Afan Forest Park. You enter an unexpected landscape of forested mountain slopes and steep river valleys, rich in history.
This area was designated as a Forest Park in 1972 because of its great walking potential. From early monastic estates, the landscape developed into a farming area and later a coal mining valley. The last mine closed in 1970, and from this land of scattered farmsteads, ancient woodlands, viaducts, disused railways and mined land, have sprung the forests and woodlands of the Afan Valley.
We offer walkers a wide range of waymarked trails which criss-cross the valleys and hillsides, providing wonderful panoramas and taking in features of interest on the way.
World class mountain biking centre
Afan is recognised as a world class centre for mountain biking and a wide range of other outdoor activities. As well as technical singletrack for mountain bikers, there are miles of comfortable family cycling trails linking the forest and local communities (you can hire bikes at either one of the two visitor centres) as well as opportunities for horse-riding, fishing and learning about the area and its heritage.
