Snowdon Mountain Railway new Heritage Carriage

Snowdon Mountain Railway new Heritage Carriage

Details

Weather permitting trains will run every day from 17th March to 29th October. From March to early May, trains will terminate at the unsheltered Clogwyn Station (subject to winter weather conditions). The Summit Station is the usual destination between May and the end of the season.

From the moment you leave the station your train will begin the journey upwards to the clouds, a journey experienced by some 12 million intrepid travellers since 1896.

This is a fabulous land of faeries and giants and kings. For centuries Welsh princes held council here .It is a land rich in alpine flowers and rare ferns left behind the retreating ice age and it is dotted with ruins that chronicle the history of long lost communities. These ancient mountains thrust upwards by volcanis forces 450 million years ago once towered 10,000 metres .Over eons the wind and rain and successive ice ages have sculpted them to their current form.

Soon after your train leaves Llanberis station the track crosses the first of two viaducts across the Afon Hwch river and a wonderful view of the waterfall plunging into the gorge below can be seen. As the train emerges into open ground one has a first glimpse of the peak of Snowdon as it pokes its head above the ridge to the right of the train. The train soon passes Car Esgob, Bishops Field and the ruined Hebron Chapel before the train starts its summit ascent in earnest amongst spectacular countryside before finally one of the worlds great panoramas will be revealed at the Summit of Snowdon, Eryri, Land of the Eagles.

We have two travel experiences to offer :

The Heritage Steam Experience on the “Snowdon Lily” - The Snowdon Lily is built on the original chassis and bogey from the original carriage of 1896. The unique original nature of our railway means that the visitor of today will experience exactly what our ancestors did back in 1896 and see for themselves how beautiful the mountain is as they journey through the clouds to Yr Wyddfa, Snowdon. Pushed by one of our three working steam locomotives from 1896, the Snowdon Lily is an accurate re-construction of one of our original Snowdon Mountain Tramroad & Hotels Co Ltd 1896 observation carriages. Seating only 34 passengers with a central aisle, in twos and fours, we urge passengers who prefer a little more room to book their trip on the Snowdon Lily. Departures leave Llanberis three times per day, May to September and pre-booking is advised to avoid disappointment. Journey time to the Summit is one hour with a 30 minute stop over at the peak.

Tradition Diesel Service - Spanning three centuries our Railway is acutely aware of our legacy. Recently new carriages have been built and commissioned to ensure that visitors to North Wales can continue to enjoy our unique Mountain Railway experience for many years to come. Pushed by one of our Hunslet Engine Company diesel locomotives (1985) our new carriages (in service 2013) seat 74 passengers, 10 per compartment. Departures leave Llanberis every day from mid-March until the end of October on the hour and on the half hour. Journey time to the summit is one hour with a 30 minute stop over at the peak.

Why not arrive a little before your scheduled departure time and see what our Station at Llanberis has to offer. With screenings three times per hour the Snowdon Mountain Railway Film Theatre currently shows our very own production “To the Summit of Snowdon” a fifteen minute film describing the history of our Railway which includes tantalising glimpses of the stunning views of the mountain. In addition, we are proud to present a series of original “IVOR THE ENGINE” cartoons especially for our younger visitors. Voiced by Windsor Davies this quintessentially Welsh Railway complements perfectly the tradition and warmth we try always to convey.

As well as the film theatre we have a wonderful Victorian shopping experience stocking a range of Welsh souvenir products, a Station Buffet serving a range of hot and cold snacks and drinks and our Platform Grill serving Bacon Baps, Burgers, Hot Dogs and Fries.
