Gladstone's Library

Gladstone's Library

Details

Gladstone’s Library houses a unique and distinctive array of rare books and special collections. In this talk, Librarian Gary Butler uses the four figures whose statues adorn the Library - Saint Augustine, Dante, Homer, and the eighteenth-century philosopher and theologian Joseph Butler – as guides through a thematic exploration of some of the Library’s printed treasures. With a special display of items from the collection. Learn more about what makes our rare books so rare, and our special collections so special, and leave with a greater understanding of the meaning and value of the printed word.

Gary Butler helps look after the rare books and special collections at Gladstone’s Library. He trained as a librarian at Aberystwyth. Gary Butler is no relation to the eighteenth-century philosopher and theologian Joseph Butler.
