Fact into Fiction

Fact into Fiction

A Masterclass with Writer in Residence Sarah Day. From historical novels to imagined biographies, writers have always been drawn towards turning fact into fiction. In this masterclass, novelist Sarah Day will help participants turn their own ideas (and perhaps even historical documents) into the starting point of a compelling piece of fiction. Fiction based on real life might start with a complex, well-documented historical event; alternatively a single diary entry might provide the spark. Using these starting points, explore techniques for turning real life events into fiction.

Sarah Day is a historical novelist, columnist, and reviewer. After some years spent in science-based disciplines her debut novel, Mussolini’s Island, was published in 2017 to creative and commercial success (winner of a Betty Trask award, shortlisted for the HWA Debut Crown and Polari First Novel Prize). As well as writing fiction, Sarah is a science communicator for the Geological Society and has also worked with The Natural History Museum and the British Science Association to find news way to communicate scientific theories and discoveries.
