Eminent Victorian Artists: Joseph Mallord William

Details

Part of a short lecture series, showcasing some of the greatest artistic genius of the Victorian period, with Adrian Sumner. All proceeds to Gladstone's Living Heritage Project.

Championed by John Ruskin and recognised throughout Europe as Britain’s greatest ever painter, J. M. W. Turner epitomised the Romantic Movement, and ushered in Modernism and the cult of the Personality Painter. With John Constable and William Blake, Turner showed new ways of interpreting nature and brought a new universality to British art. This lecture examines the extraordinary breadth of Turner’s painting, the work of his great contemporaries, and how this led to Impressionism and other nineteenth-century styles.
