Details

The castle grounds (outdoors area within the walls) and our toilets in the castle are now open Tuesday - Sunday (11am-4pm) and refreshments including hot and cold drinks and light snacks are available on a take away basis from our cafe. The main castle buildings remain closed at the present time.

The country park is currently open to all and our car park is operating from 8:30am – 8:30pm every day. The toilets in the country park are also open 8.30am -4.30pm.

Visit Caldicot Castle in its beautiful setting of tranquil gardens and a wooded country park. Founded by the Normans, developed in royal hands as a stronghold in the Middle Ages and restored as a Victorian family home, the castle has a romantic and colourful history.

Find out about its past, explore the medieval towers and take in the breath-taking views of the parklands and surrounding area from the battlements. You will be able to travel through time and discover the home of Welsh castle life, from medieval times to the twentieth century.The castle was developed as a fortress by Royal hands in the Middle Ages and restored as a Victorian family home. The River Nedern winds its way through the park, and the wildlife pond is home to a variety of wildfowl.

You can see the 12 pounder muzzle-loading HMS Foudroyant’s cannon in our courtyard. Come and unravel the mysteries of the dark chilling castle dungeon. Caldicot Castle is reputed to be haunted by a number of ghosts. Who will you see before you leave?

The Castle's tower is one of the best places to view the Severn estuary. The castle was built on a spur of sandstone to control the River Nedern flowing nearby. The river was once a tidal estuary navigable for several miles upstream.

Opening details

The castle grounds internally will reopen on April 1st 2021 with a take away refreshment on offer.

During our open season, the castle's hours are 11am to 4pm Tuesday - Sunday and entry is free. The castle is closed on Monday's except for Bank Holidays.

Between the end of October and April vehicular access and the main car park is closed between 5.30pm and 8.00am (although the Church Road car park remains open).
