About

Step back in time at the National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon near Newport, South Wales and explore life in a far-flung outpost of the mighty Roman Empire.

Wales was the furthest outpost of the Roman Empire. In AD 75, the Romans built a fortress at Caerleon that would guard the region for over 200 years. It is one of three Roman sites in Caerleon, along with the Baths museum and the open-air ruins of the amphitheatre and barracks. It is part of the wider network of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales.

At the museum, you can learn what made the Romans a formidable force and how life wouldn't be the same without them. You'll be able to see Exhibitions and Artefacts that show us how they lived, fought, worshipped and died.

The Roman Garden
Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of our beautiful Roman Garden. The Romans planted fruit, vegetables and herbs for food and medicine, and many plants and flowers were used in religious practices. They brought their garden designs with them in 43 AD, but the change in climate restricted the range of plants that could flourish.
