National Museum Wales and the European Centre for Documentary Research Conference Present - CONFERENCE: Women in Focus: Documentary and Citizenship.

In response to a season of photography exhibitions at the National Museum of Wales - Women in Focus, this two day conference will address the politics of photography in terms of its relationship to citizenship. Its focus will be on the ways in which women have been represented by photography and how they have shaped, and continue to shape, the history of photography.

Day one - National Museum Wales
The National Museum, in association with Magnum, presents a day of talks and panel discussions curated by Fiona Rogers, Founder of Firecracker, where leading women photographers will discuss their role and influence within documentary photography, and explore how their practice can be understood within the context of today’s cultural politics.

Evening event – Ffotogallery Exhibition Launch
In their city centre gallery, Ffotogallery present Magnum nominee Lua Ribeira’s Noises in the Blood, an insightful commentary on British Jamaican Dancehall culture. In their Penarth venue, Turner House, award-winning Iranian artist Amak Mahmoodian will be showing a new collection of archival work. Refreshments and coach travel will be provided between venues.

Day two - European Centre for Documentary Research: University of South Wales
The European Centre for Documentary Research Conference presents a series of talks that explore the way in which contemporary photographic practice has become a civil and political matter, where those who are pictured are now beginning to matter more than ever before. Inspired by the work of Ariella Azoulay, who suggests that every photograph is the result of a dynamic encounter between the photographer and the photographed, the conference will provide an opportunity for a broad discussion of this emerging theme in photographic theory and practice.

Tickets are £30 full price and £20 on production of a Student Union Card. This covers two full conference days, evening talk and reception at Ffotogallery on the evening of 24 January and tea and coffee during the conference.
