Joe Kelleher’s lecture will consider various forms as they arise in some of Ragnar Kjartansson’s works for theatre and live performance. In the case of Raw Salon (his 15-hour live theatre work), the borrowed reference is theatre, although on other occasions it may be landscape or portrait painting, popular song, pictorial set-design, narrative film-making, dressing-up, or opera singing. These are forms that would appear to have had their day, but which Kjartansson’s work sustains – for as long as the work lasts – as not quite exhausted yet spaces of attachment, of care, of invention: of human possibility.

Joe Kelleher is Professor of Theatre and Performance at University of Roehampton, London. His books include The illuminated theatre: Studies on the suffering of images (Routledge 2015) and Theatre & politics (Palgrave Macmillan 2009). In 2016 with Nicholas Ridout he co-curated a performative symposium The Things They Do in response to the Barbican’s major exhibition of Ragnar Kjartansson’s work.
