Wildlife & Nature Event

Details

Each winter at RSPB Newport Wetlands, one of the true spectacles of the natural world takes place when tens of thousands of starlings gather above the reeds. These flocks, known as a murmuration see these fantastic birds wheel and swoop in the air creating a magical wild theatre show before they choose a place in the reeds to roost for the evening. In the failing light of dusk and given the speed these birds fly at, especially if the resident peregrine falcon is on the hunt, it can be very tricky to photograph. Join professional photographer David Broadbent and learn how to photograph this wonderful spectacle. The course is suitable for all levels and all types of camera’s and devices. During the day you’ll enjoy lunch, hear from RSPB Newport Wetlands staff on the science and findings of the murmuration before enjoying some expert photography tuition. You will learn about camera set up, creative techniques, natural and modified lighting all in simple jargon free language that is easy to understand and doesn’t necessarily require expensive specialist equipment. This is a group course to enjoy with fellow murmuration fans but there will also be plenty of opportunity for one to one sessions with David.

If you haven’t been to RSPB Newport Wetlands before come and enjoy the wildlife sounds of winter on a reserve that has great views, great wildlife and great facilities. We'll start at 12 noon for lunch followed by a starling presentation from RSPB staff. Then out to our training area where there will be expert tuition in camera set up and technique before dusk. After that, it’s up to the starlings! Once they have gone to roost, we’ll return to the training room for a debrief and to share our images and a warming hot drink. Feel free to ask questions and specific advice along the way. Following our field session there will be an opportunity to pick your personal favourite for a helpful critique of the images from the day.
