Venue: Welshpool Methodist Church, 7.30pm

Guilsfield Singers perform all kinds of music - sacred and secular, serious and light-hearted; we sing folk songs and spirituals, cantatas and carols, requiems, and medleys from musicals.

This year’s spring concert has Leonard Bernstein’s exciting Chichester Psalms as the centrepiece of a concert on the theme “A Ceremony of Psalms”. Bernstein’s piece – which includes some material originally planned for West Side Story, but never used, will be sung the original Hebrew – a new challenge for the choir! Commissioned by Chichester Festival, (hence the name), the work was premiered in New York City on 15 July 1965, conducted by the composer. That was followed by a performance at Chichester Cathedral two weeks later and the work has become a popular feature of the choral repertoire ever since.

Instrumental accompaniment for Chichester Psalms includes percussion and harp, and we are delighted that local harpist Alis Huws will be joining us. Alis is a prizewinning graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama; she has performed with Katherine Jenkins and Only Men Aloud, and played at Buckingham Palace.

As well as Bernstein, the choir will be singing settings of psalms by Holst, Schubert and Parry plus Monteverdi’s beautiful Beatus Vir, which will be accompanied by two flutes.

Tickets cost £10, and are available by phone, tel. 01938 559249, from Welshpool Jewellers, and at the door.

The concert will be raising funds for Blood Bikes Wales, a charity which helps provide an out-of-hours courier service to the NHS in Wales.
