Details

Llyn Geirionnydd is a 3/4-mile long lake in Gwydir Forest, and reputedly the home of the 6th century poet Taliesin.

Getting to Llyn Geirionnydd is not particularly easy, but this has not stopped the lake being the only one designated in Snowdonia to permit power boats and water skiing. Many visitors also walk to the lake from the village of Trefriw (it is on one of the Trefriw Trail routes) or from the neighbouring Llyn Crafnant (with Natural Resources Wales car park), the two lakes being separated by Mynydd Deulyn – “mountain of the two lakes”.

It is difficult to imagine that this was a derelict industrial landscape in the 1870s. In fact, the car park lies on a waste tip near an old lead mine entrance.

From here you can walk around the lake.

There is also a walking trail:

Geirionydd to Crafnant Trail 2.6 miles, 4.4 kilmoetres
This trail takes in the two beautiful lakes of Geirionnydd and Crafnant. The route heads off around the southern edge of Llyn Geirionnydd and offers fantastic views down the lake’s full length. It then descends steeply through the shady forest to a wonderful view across Llyn Crafnant and the other side of the valley.

You can download our leaflets by visiting our Natural Resources Wales website.

Directions:

You can reach the lake by car from Trefriw or Gwydir Castle, Llanrwst (follow signs for Geirionnydd), the narrow lane passing through the hamlet of Llanrhychwyn, or from the wiggley single-track road through Gwydir Forest from the Ugly House (Ty Hyll) or Pont y Pair in Betws y Coed on the A5 to Capel Curig.

Llyn Geirionnydd has a car park and toilets and is very popular in summer.

The Gwydir Forest can be accessed from eight different car parks and locations. Most of which are close to refreshment places and toilets. Please note: Sometimes we need to close or divert trails for your safety whilst we undertake maintenance work or forest operations. Occasionally we may have to close a site in extreme weather, such as high winds or snow and ice due to the risk of injury to visitors or staff. Please always follow any instructions onsite and make sure you follow any temporary diversion signs in place.
