About

Experience this huge forest's stunning landscapes and rich wildlife

Clocaenog Forest is part of the bigger Hiraethog Forest covering 6000 hectares (15000 acres) on a broad rolling landscape. This in turn is part of Mynydd Hiraethog - the 'hills of great longing'.

This large forest lies to the north of the B5105 on the Hiraethog Moors. It is very quiet and as a result is home to one of Wales's remaining populations of red squirrel and a key area for the increasingly rare black grouse. We look after areas of the forest to help these species. There are wildlife viewing hides and even Prezewalski horses being used to keep ancient monuments clear of vegetation. There are many breeding birds of prey species.

The walks introduce you to the varied scenery of Clocaenog Forest. You can experience changing forest landscapes, open moorland, wildlife, ancient history, rivers, a beautiful lake and superb views. With gentle strolls, pleasant short walks, exhilarating longer routes and breathtaking summit climbs, there is something for all tastes.

Many miles of very quiet forest roads and numerous car parks makes this forest an ideal location for family cycling and horse riding. There is open access for horse riders throughout Hiraethog Forest.
