Music Festival

The annual Machynlleth Festival provides a week-long feast of the finest classical music, with talks, interviews and masterclasses, as well as a jazz night.

The wonderful opening Cymanfa Ganu is an opportunity to sing or hear Welsh hymns ringing round a concert hall that has one of the finest acoustics in Britain and Europe.

During the festival, eminent performers take part in a wide range of events, from choral singing and jazz to chamber music and poetry readings. Special features are the Hallstatt Lecture on an aspect of Celtic culture and the Glyndwr Award for an Outstanding Contribution to the Arts in Wales.

Highlights this year abound. They include a programme of Baroque classics from the violinist Rachel Podger; Schubert’s sublime String Quintet from the Doric Quartet and cellist Natalie Clein;
Beethoven’s Archduke Trio with the superb Vienna Piano Trio; the UK debut of the Dutch recorder wunderkind Lucie Horsch; the return by public demand of the brilliant Budapest Café Orchestra; Mendelssohn’s glorious Octet for strings from the combined forces of the Ruisi and Solem quartets; and Roderick Williams singing the eternal song cycle of love and loss, Die Schöne Müllerin.

All this plus a masterclass for young cellists, interviews, pre concert talks by the brilliant Christopher Cook, late night candlelit concerts and a free Family Concert introduced by CBeebies presenter, Chris Jarvis.
