Opera, Thu 11 Oct 2018, £31-£35

Russian State Opera presents one of Verdi's greatest Operas. Featuring an impressive cast accompanied by a live orchestra with over thirty musicians.

After last year's successful season of Madama Butterfly and Tosca, Russian State Opera returns with La Traviata in another world-class production guaranteed to delight you with sumptuous sets and splendid new costumes.

La Traviata - a tragic love story epitomised by sacrifice of a woman condemned by misunderstanding. This haunting tragedy, with its beautiful arias and unforgettable chorus pieces, will transport you into the exclusive demi-monde of French aristocracy in the 1850s. Giuseppe Verdi brings the beguiling splendour and gaiety of mid-19th century Parisian life to the stage. But beyond the revelry and hedonism lurks heartbreak and pathos in this tragic and resonant morality tale in which Violetta, a high-society courtesan with a heart of gold, sacrifices everything for the man she loves.

La Traviata, Verdi's undisputed masterpiece, contains some of his most beautiful and memorable music. The score encompasses an astonishing range of moods and emotions, from Alfredo's aristocratic charms to Violetta's vivid sparkle, perfectly captured in Libiamo ne' lieti calici - (Drink from the joyful cup) in which they toast life and free will.

A deeply moving opera overflowing with emotion and containing moments of pure genius, La Traviata is an unforgettable, powerful experience.

Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
