Cardiff Foraging Course

Details

Bute Park covers over 130 acres in the centre of Cardiff, making it one of the largest urban parks in Europe. The mixture of mature parkland, woodland and riverside makes it surprisingly plentiful in wild plants, flowers and a variety of fungi throughout the year. As well as a nationally significant arboretum containing the most champion trees of any UK public park, the area is home to a lot of wildlife including woodpeckers, herons and even otters.

We will meet at the Castle Street entrance to the park, outside the Pettigrew tearooms. The course starts there with a short introduction on what to look for and a brief of the general countryside codes, where they relate to foragers. Tea or coffee is available from the cafe.

Then we’ll set off on a roughly 2.5 hour walk around the park and along the River Taff, teaching you how to identify the different plants, flowers, fruits and mushrooms that we find. We will stop along the way for some seasonal homemade refreshments such as our lovely hogweed and wild garlic soup, elderflower champagne or fruit leathers.

After the walk we will end the day with a tasty wild food lunch based on what we have found. All of our food is seasonal so what we make depends on recent weather and what is around at that time of year. In spring we will be making use of the wild garlic and in autumn the array of tasty wild mushrooms that the park has to offer.
