Llanelli

Details

In Llanelli a major new entertainment and leisure complex, the Old Castle Works, has recently been completed, whilst the Theatr Elli and the Parc Howard Museum and Art Gallery continue to maintain Llanelli's strong tradition in the arts. Viewers of the BBC's restoration programme will relish the chance to see the redeveloped Llanelly House which has a prominent position opposite the Parish Church.

The town benefits from being very close to the scenic Pembrey Country Park which boasts an eight mile long beach named Cefn Sidan. Also close by is the National Wetlands Centre and the Millennium Coastal Park. Llanelli has a railway station on the West Wales line from Swansea to Carmarthen and on the Heart of Wales line from Swansea to Shrewsbury.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Llanelli, the largest town in the county of Carmarthenshire, sits on the Loughor estuary on the South Wales coast, approximately 10 miles (16 km) west-north-west of Swansea and 12 miles (19 km) south-east of the county town, Carmarthen. The former mining town was once known as Tinopolis such was its stature within the tinplate industry. Today it is probably best known as being the home of Llanelli Scarlets, the famous Rugby team. In fact it wouldn't be inaccurate to describe the heritage of Llanelli as being built upon three pillars of the community; tin, rugby and beer. Whilst Llanelli grew from a village into one of the biggest towns in Wales during the pomp of its tin mining industry it has been producing world class rugby players for decades, but its association with hops and barley stretch even further back. The Reverend James Buckley established a small brewery in Llanelli during the 18th century, his achievement being commemorated by the Reverend James bitter by Brains. The Buckley Brewery was followed by the Felinfoel Brewery which remains active today.
