Some things look better from a vantage point up, up and away than from the ground. Hen Gwrt is surely one. If you could view it from above, you’d see with definitive clarity the neat, square outline of what was probably a medieval manorial site. The manor has long gone, but its square-sided moat remains, surprising well preserved.
Hen Gwrt (‘The Old Court’) probably belonged to the bishops of Llandaff in the 13th and 14th centuries, and was later used as a hunting lodge.

Hen Gwrt is at Llantilio Crossenny 7 miles (11.3km) east of Abergavenny adjoining the B4233. Travelling from the Abergavenny direction, continue past the village sign and a crossroads and the site is just after the next junction on the left.
