Vale of Glamorgan Festival - Armida Quartet

Vale of Glamorgan Festival - Armida Quartet

Vale of Glamorgan Festival - Armida Quartet.

This programme celebrates the fascinating internationalist perspectives of four composers who combine the influences of the countries in which they were born with the culture of the countries where they now live.

Tatar-Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina is a long term resident of Hamburg. Her music draws on her deep spirituality: “I am a religious Russian Orthodox person and I understand ‘religion’ in the literal meaning of the word, as ‘re-ligio’, that is to say the restoration of connections, the restoration of the ‘legato’ of life. There is no more serious task for music than this.”

Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, also now resident in Germany, was raised in Azerbijan. ‘Muga-Sayagi’ is an arresting example of the music for which she is best-known, weaving traditional Azerbijani folk music, poetry and improvisation with 20th century Western compositional techniques.

Bulgarian-born Dobrinka Tabakova and South-African Robert Fokkens are based in the UK – Robert in Wales. This concert sees the world premiere of a new work for string quartet, commissioned by the Vale of Glamorgan Festival, with funding from Ty Cerdd.
