Treorchy lies in the Rhondda Fawr valley, north-west of Pontypridd; taking in the nearby villages of Cwmparc and Ynyswen it has a population of 7,700. Prior to industrialisation, the area was predominantly meadows, pastures and woodland and farmed by tenant farmers; the discovery of coal in the Rhondda Valley transformed the locality and within the decades after 1851 Treorchy became a densely populated industrial town. All of the collieries had closed by the end of the 1970s and Treorchy became a commuter village

For 130 years the Treorchy Male Choir has been recognised as one of the greatest choral ensembles of all time. Early competition victories were followed by regular radio and television broadcasts, feature films and an unequalled number of commercial recordings. The Choir has given several Royal Command Performances, appeared alongside very many international entertainers and undertaken a number of tours to Canada, USA, New Zealand and Australia.

Treorchy has a railway station on the Rhondda line from Cardiff Central.
