Founded as a Roman fort in AD 79 it was one of the three main army camps in the Roman province of Britannia and later became a major civilian settlement. Apart from a 110 yard section, the listed Grade I walls are almost complete. It has a number of medieval buildings although some of the black-and-white buildings within the city centre are Victorian restorations.
