About

Gigrin Farm, famous for its Red Kite Feeding, attracts visitors from around the world.  Located half a mile from Rhayader, hundreds of Red Kites feed here every day. It’s a breath-taking spectacle and is the best place in the UK to see and photograph 100s' of wild Red Kites (including rare leucistic Red Kites).

Located half a mile from Rhayader town centre, in the beautiful countryside of Mid-Wales, overlooking both the Wye and Elan valleys.   The Red Kites are fed once daily at 2pm (end October to end March) and 3pm (end March to end October). The number of Kites being fed varies dependent upon the time of year from around 300 in the summer to 500 in the colder months.  Rare leucistic (white) Red Kites frequently visit the farm.

A bird-watchers’ paradise, appealing to families, educational groups and professional photographers/film-makers alike. Facilities include covered standard hides (three with ramp access), an outdoor viewing area, and specialist photographic hides. There is a coffee shop (cakes, hot & cold drinks, snacks, ice-creams), gift shop, pic-nic site, and a farm walk, with on-site car-parking and toilet facilities (including disabled facilities).   Dogs are welcome but they must be on a short lead at all times.

Red Kite Feeding
The kites are fed once daily at 2pm during the winter and 3pm during the summer.

There are 5 standard viewing hides (3 with ramp access) and a viewing field.

Once the meat has been put out, crows will typically start emerging from the surrounding trees. Kites watch and await their chance to furl their wings and dive in, skimming the ground to snatch a scrap before rising suddenly to escape the beaks of the angry crows!

With the meat clutched in its talons the kite will make for clear airspace where it can feel secure enough to feed. The number of kites using the feeding station can vary anything from a couple of hundred to around 400 depending on the weather and the time of year.

Photographic Hides
While the standard hides are more than adequate for photography, there are also specialist hides for photographers with lenses of 300mm and upwards.

Schools, Groups, and Coaches
Gigrin Farm welcome groups to the farm, but they must be booked ahead and there is a large car park with an ample area for coaches.
