SFQ

About

SFQ is a new UK-Norway collaboration that draws together four of Europe's leading improvisers. The quartet's core repertoire is music written by saxophonist, composer and researcher Mike Fletcher to explore ideas about how melody and form influence free improvisation.

Mike Fletcher
Mike Fletcher is a UK-based woodwind multi-instrumentalist, composer, writer, and researcher who works predominantly in the fields of jazz and improvised music. Whether it is as instrumentalist or composer – or more commonly both at once – his approach to making music prioritises spontaneous interactive dialogue between performers.

As a performer-bandleader he has appeared at leading jazz venues and across the UK (EFG London Jazz Festival/Cheltenham Jazz Festival/Manchester Jazz Festival), Europe (Outono Em Jazz – Portugal, Jazz Goes To Town – Czech Republic) and internationally (Cambio S Festival – Brazil, IAJE Conference – Toronto). In 2015 he was nominated to tour Europe with a jazz trio featuring bassist Olie Brice and drummer Jeff Williams as part of the ECHO Rising Stars programme - with performances the Barbican Centre in London, Hamburg's Laeiszhalle, BOZAR in Brussels, the Stockholm Konserthuset and Gulbenkian Centre in Lisbon.

He has worked with many leading improvising musicians including Tony Bianco, Paul Dunmall, Mark Sanders, and has written music for saxophonists Lee Konitz and Andrew D'Angelo, and drummer Dan Weiss.

Petter Frost Fadnes
Reed player, teacher, and researcher Petter Frost Fadnes spent his formative years in the UK, resettling in Norway in 2008 still under the influence of British improvised music. He is known for utilizing the (seemingly) full range of sound-possibilities on his alto and baritone, incorporating everything from the jazz canon to abstract noise and electronics in his improvisational approaches. He is a regular member of the Stavanger-based Kitchen Orchestra, as well as the trio The Geordie Approach and the quartet Mole, to name but a few.

Olie Brice
Olie Brice is a double bassist, improviser and composer. Raised in London and Jerusalem, he now lives by the sea in Hastings. Brice is a committed free improviser, who has performed, toured and recorded with many of the leading names in the music. Frequent collaborators include Mark Sanders, Paul Dunmall, Rachel Musson, Tobias Delius, Cath Roberts and Luis Vicente, and he has also appeared with the likes of Evan Parker, Tony Malaby, John Butcher, Ingrid Laubrock, Ken Vandermark, Eddie Prevost and Louis Moholo.

Dag Magnus Narvesen
Dag Magnus Narvesen is a drummer, percussionist and composer who is mainly working in the field of improvised and contemporary music. Emerging from the diverse and renowned jazz scene of Norway, leading bands like Sasquatch, co-leading Kitchen Orchestra and as a member of Gunhild Seim's Time Jungle, his current musical endeavors feature his highly acclaimed octet DAMANA, Schlippenbach/Narvesen Duo, Dag Magnus Narvesen kvintett, Harri Sjöström's MOVE quintet and Up and Out, Didrik Ingvaldsen Orchestra and Aki Takase's Japanic, to name a few. In working with these and other bands, especially some tied to the Berlin scene, he has acquired a reputation as a highly skilled drummer and a trusted musical collaborator.
