Details

The Elan Valley Estate achieved International Dark Sky Park status in 2015 and became the first privately owned but publicly accessible park in the world.

The Estate achieved the silver-tier status by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) An International Dark Sky Park (IDSP) is a land possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and/or public enjoyment.

This status now means that the entire 45,000 acres of the Elan Valley are protected against light pollution for the benefit of those who live and work here, in addition to the many visitors each year. The status also provides sanctuary for the abundance of wildlife and nature which can be found by day or night here on the estate.

VISITING THE ELAN VALLEY AT NIGHT
When you visit the Elan Valley at night, it is imperative to consider your own safety and the safety of others. Always plan and prepare before you set off. You could consider using a checklist like the one below:

Make sure people at home know where you are and what time you are expected to return
Consult the weather before setting off. Is your vehicle able to cope with icy roads, for example?
Mobile phone for emergencies – please note that on the Elan Estate, mobile reception is very poor and mostly non-existent
Bring food and warm drinks
Bring torches and spare batteries
Pack extra warm clothing and a sleeping bag – it can get very cold and windy on the Elan Estate
